Room 418, Tuesday Evening

Funny how what had seemed like more than a year's accumulation of stuff when Door moved into and out of the cabins isn't taking very long to pack tonight, even with Chimney fluttering about making questionably helpful suggestions in Pigeon.

Then again, it's not that she doesn't have a boatload of books and clothing and random recipes for pie. It's just that most of it isn't going into the couple of bags she can safely carry with her, since she can't just take it all home. Home isn't safe.

But... even though she's sorting slowly, taking more time to decide whether something goes or stays than she probably needs to, Door can't help breaking into a smile every so often. Home isn't safe, but after last night, for the first time since she came here a year ago, there's a chance that home is... home.

"That's not neccessarily a bad thing," Carmela points out. "It just means there's more than one place where you can belong."

Door looks up. "That's...yeah. I hadn't ever thought that'd be true, before. London Below is pretty much for people who can't belong anywhere else."

"Well, now you know you can be other places too," Carmela says. "Like New York, maybe, someday. If you felt like visiting."

Door smiles. "There's supposed to be a huge white alligator in the undercity of New York. Though it might be my New York and not yours."

"I don't know," Carmela says thoughtfully. "That doesn't sound too out of the realm of possibility for my New York, either. It just means it's probably a wizard."

"We have magic, but I don't think we have wizards like yours," Door says, think if their handwavy, o so handwavy weekend away. "Though heaven knows I don't know everything about my own world, let alone anybody else's."

"Well," Carmela says. "Then I don't know if you'll actually be able to *use* this, but even if you can't, it's pretty and it shouldn't take up much space with your stuff," she pulls what looks to be an ordinary charm bracelet out of her pocket. A closer inspection would reveal that it had a very slight glow to it.

"Oh!" Door holds out her hand, studying the bracelet. "It is pretty. What does it do? Or not do, if it doesn't work?"

"It's protection," Carmela explains, handing it over. "My friend Nita likes to store her spells this way, sometimes. I asked her if she could find a way to make a non-wizard able to use it, and she did. The charms are actually spells- you just need to pull on them to release them."

"It...might work?" Doors says, letting the bracelet hand and lightly pinging one of the charms with her finger. "Your wizards seem to make magic differently, or maybe just look at it differently, but we have this sort of thing as well. Do they all do something different?"

Carmela nods. "That one will make a sort of... silence bubble? So you and anyone you're taking with can't be overheard. There's also one that'll freeze everyone around you for a few minutes," she explains. "Nita was going to add a teleportation spell as well, but I figured that'd be the one spell you wouldn't really need. So instead there's this one," she points to another charm. "Which will make a decoy-you that lasts for about an hour."

Just one of those things would be the sort of cantrip you'd have to trade something highly valuable - usually more than was wise - for, Below-side. Door traces her fingers over the charms again, listening to them jingle.

"That could be life-saving. Any of them could. Thank you - it's wonderful."

"I happen to believe that yours is very definitely a life worth saving, so you're welcome," Carmela says with a smile.

And that finally makes Door's composure crack, just a bit. Not that she's not amazed and grateful and determined to take this chance and make something of it, but...

She leans forward to give Camela a hug and asks quietly, "I can do this, right?"
