Room 418, Tuesday Evening

Funny how what had seemed like more than a year's accumulation of stuff when Door moved into and out of the cabins isn't taking very long to pack tonight, even with Chimney fluttering about making questionably helpful suggestions in Pigeon.

Then again, it's not that she doesn't have a boatload of books and clothing and random recipes for pie. It's just that most of it isn't going into the couple of bags she can safely carry with her, since she can't just take it all home. Home isn't safe.

But... even though she's sorting slowly, taking more time to decide whether something goes or stays than she probably needs to, Door can't help breaking into a smile every so often. Home isn't safe, but after last night, for the first time since she came here a year ago, there's a chance that home is... home.

Robin was passing by in the hallway, practicing his Dog, by singing "Homeward Bound" in hound dog.

Door smiles and leans out the open doorway. "That's very pretty." It is, once you get past the oddness of a song being barked and howled in dog-language with the voice of a frog.

"Oh! Hi door! Thanks! How are you?"

"I'm..." It takes a moment of wondering, before the answer to her self-inventory is a small, pleasantly-surprised laugh. "I'm good, I think. I'm going home."

"Oh you are? For how long?" Something was tickling at his brain.

Evie came by. With a pie. Fortunately from J,GoB.

"For the road. Such as it is." Evie looked mournful. "You really have to leave, then?"

"Oooh, thanks!" Door's eyes light up, and she reaches for one of her packs, fairly sure that either Barry Plodder will understand having to be left behind in favor of pie -- she's only on the first book, after all -- or...well, she doesn't really need those socks.

"I don't have to go; it'd probably be smarter to stay here. But...my sister's alive. And there's a chance I can find her."

"Then you definitely do have to go," Evie said, plopping down on the bed. "It's your sister! I'd feel the same, if it were Jonathan. Do you have any idea where she's been all this time?"

At that, a dark look crosses Door's face. "I think they have her, the ones who killed our family. Or they know where she is."

Evie gave Door a worried look. "Heavens. Do you-- is there anyone who can help find her? You do have someone back home who can look out for you, don't you?"

Carmela, of course, is here. "Hey," she says, wandering in and sitting down crosslegged on the bed.

"Hey." Oh look, it's time for her union-mandated packing break. Door slings the bag she's stuffing with clothes over one bedpost, and sits down. "It's...weird, how weird it is to be leaving. How used to it I let myself get."

"It's going to be so weird *without* you," Carmela admits.

Which is one of the reasons, despite her reasons for leaving, that she's been sorting so slowly. Door draws her feet up under her and wraps her hands around her knees. "I know. It seems like I'm going to be missing someone no matter where I am, now."

"That's not neccessarily a bad thing," Carmela points out. "It just means there's more than one place where you can belong."

Dawn poked her head in. "Oh, good. I didn't miss you." Then she realized how that sounded. "Well, I will miss you, but I can't miss you yet, because you're still here, and wow, I should really stop talking. Anything you need?"

Door laughs. "Come on in. Talk all you like." She surveys the piles of Take and Leave. "At this point it's more about making sure I leave the stuff I don't need."

She wasn't sure which pile was which, and kind of stood in the middle of the room so she didn't knock anything over. "You can't take it all with you?"

"Not easily. I have a house, but..." Door shakes her head. "It's where my family was attacked. It's dangerous to even visit it now." Not that that's going to stop her, but there's a difference between sneaking in to look for clues, and actually living there.

Seely wasn't looking worried, or concerned, or anything like that.

Door looks up from trying not to admit she has most of her things sorted, and catches him not looking worried or concerned or anything like that. "I'll be all right," she says, even though she doesn't know any such thing for sure.

"You don't know that," Seely said softly.

She looks prepared to argue, but stops instead, and reluctantly nods. "No. I don't know. But I can't not do it."
