Room 418, Tuesday Evening

Funny how what had seemed like more than a year's accumulation of stuff when Door moved into and out of the cabins isn't taking very long to pack tonight, even with Chimney fluttering about making questionably helpful suggestions in Pigeon.

Then again, it's not that she doesn't have a boatload of books and clothing and random recipes for pie. It's just that most of it isn't going into the couple of bags she can safely carry with her, since she can't just take it all home. Home isn't safe.

But... even though she's sorting slowly, taking more time to decide whether something goes or stays than she probably needs to, Door can't help breaking into a smile every so often. Home isn't safe, but after last night, for the first time since she came here a year ago, there's a chance that home is... home.

"I have no idea what you might mean," Seely said innocently.

"Of course not. You'd never have anything to do with something like that." Door grins. "I'll be careful where I decide to practice naked mutinies too; it's drafty in London Below."

"Exactly," Seely replied. "You wouldn't want to get sick."

"It's hard to be sneaky when you're naked, too, and I expect to be doing a lot of sneaking for a while."

"Sneaky is good," Seely said. "Sneaky won't get you killed."

She nods. "That's the plan. Also, there'll be plans. See? Careful."

"Plans are also good," Seely agreed.

Admittedly they're fuzzy plans, beyond certain key points, but keeping a low profile is at the top of the list. Well, near the top. "I'm going to hire a bodyguard, someone who knows his way around and has a fighting chance against what's after me. It may be a trap, but I'm not going to walk into it blind."

"Or you could walk around it?" Seely suggested. "Send someone into it ahead of you?"

"Maybe," Door replies thoughtfully, squirreling the idea away in her mind. Just going back to London Below is part of the trap, she's sure, but there's that and then there's walking right into a tripwire, and she hopes she'll know the difference. "I'm going to take one more look in our house for my father's journal, or anything that might tell me who would've been behind the whole thing. That way I might know who not to trust, at least."

"Everyone would be a good start, right?"

Door blinks then bursts into brief laughter. "You have a point. I've grown so used to having everyone around me - well, almost everyone -- being a good person, here."

"Just assume they're all like Umbridge and you should be set." Seely was completely serious.

Some of them are worse, but Door doesn't think saying that will make him more likely to believe her claim that she'll be all right. "And then I can be pleasantly surprised if they turn out like you."

That got a grin out of Seely. "Yeah, but I'm unique."

Door grins back. "That's true. No one back home has ever turned into a puppet, that I know of."

"Of course not, it's a special talent." Not that Seely still had any idea what had caused it in the first place.

Door's grin falters a little, replaced by a small, wistful smile. "No one's going to be like you at all."

Seely reached out to hug her. "Guess that means you won't be taking as many pictures then."

Not that part of this morning had been spent madly printing and stuffing them into a book or anything. "Or I'll have to find new victims and send you copies," she murmurs, hugging back.

Seely grinned. "Maybe I was wrong about who needed protection from who."

"If nothing else, I can throw the camera as a last-ditch defensive move!

"Or with pictures from your naked mutiny. ....Not that I took any such pictures."
